NACS UPDATE 2012 #7
- Zone A Meeting
- I attended the Zone A meeting on behalf of NACS President Maureen Mausbach who was unable to attend. All Zone A state associations were represented at the meeting in Denver with the exception of one. Bruce Nelson, Administrator, and Carolyn Cooksie, Associate Administrator, participated via video conference and entertained member questions for an hour. An excellent discussion on budget, restructuring, travel issues, and other topics was held. Chris Beyerhelm, DAFLP, attended the meeting in person and provided updates on FLP issues and in engaged in discussion and question/answers. Mr. Beyerhelm remained available for the afternoon for one on one discussions with individual members as necessary. Details of the speakers presentations will be provided in an upcoming NACS newsletter for the Zone.
- The afternoon session was highlighted by a presentation by Stephen Koontz, Associate Professor of Ag Economics, Colorado State University. He outlined commodity price outlook and pricing factors including drought indicators. With current inventories, usage and planting indicators, the corn, soybeans, wheat, beef cow-calf and hay markets appeared poised to be positive for the next 2-3 years. An analysis of price results from different variables was also provided. This was an excellent educational presentation on the direction of commodity prices.
- I updated members on the status of NACS goals, actions being taken by the NACS Board, and plans for upcoming consultations with the National Office. The Policy Transformation Task Force was also discussed and submissions by members encouraged. The vacancy on the NACS Board and an invitation to serve as NACS VP was made.
